How to work with F-Keys

No, not the F*** keys. Its the Function Keys.

You could probably being using your computer without ever using one of these F-keys. These F(function)-keys provide interesting shortcuts that can be useful. These F-keys are frequently used in combination with other keys such as the Shift key, CTRL key, and the ALT key.

Here are some of the uses of F-keys:

F1 - (Help)
Pressing F1 key will usually bring up a help menu. It depends on what program you are using. If you are using Windows desktop then the Windows help screen will appear.

F2 - (Rename files or Folders)
Press on a file or folder (to be rename) then press F2. Then type a name name. This F2 key is just like right-clicking a file or folder and selecting Rename.

F3 - (Open Search dialogue)
Pressing F3 key will open the Find Files window.

F4 - (Depend on your application used)
Pressing F4 will open up the history in the Address bar (when working in Internet Explorer). Pressing F4 in Excel will apply $tring to a formula.
Pressing Alt + F4 will close the open Window you are working on.

F5 - (Refresh contents in current application)
Pressing F5 when viewing a Web page is like pressing refresh button.
Pressing F5 when in Windows to refresh the screen.
Pressing F5 when you inserted a new floppy disk to refresh the screen (of the older floppy disk).

F6 - (Toggle between taskbar)
Pressing F6 will toggle between taskbars / tasks.

F7 - (Depend on your application used)
For Windows, F7 does not have any function.
It is only available for some applications. To check if F7 is availabe in an application then type F7 on the application's help screen.

F8 - (Bring you to the boot up options screen)
Pressing F8 during boot up of your computer to access Safe Mode.
Safe mode is for trouble-shooting. Do not attempt this unless you know what you are doing.

F9 - (Depend on your application used)
For Windows, F9 does not have any function (same as F7)
It is only available for some applications. To check if F9 is availabe in an application then type F9 on the application's help screen.

F10- (Open FILE at menu bar)
Press F10 then arrow keys to move around the menu.
Pressing Shift key + F10 will bring up the shortcut menu (similar to right-clicking on an object).

F11- (Hide Taskbars)
Press F11 to hide all taskbars. Useful to see more information on the screen.

F12- (Depend on your application used)
For MS Word - Pressing F12 is the shortcut key to Save As.
To check if F12 is availabe in an application then type F12 on the application's help screen.
